November 30 (117)

Here is the last Bethesda Turkey Chase 10K race shirt.  This is one from November 23, 2006 Thanksgiving Day.  Some might say that they are thankful I do not have any more Bethesda Turkey Chase shirts.  If so, you should also be thankful that several other Turkey Chase shirts I once had have been abandoned at race starts of various other races.

November 29 (116)

Here is the third in an installment of four Bethesda Turkey Chase race shirts.   This one is from Thanksgiving Day: November 22, 2007.  This was the 25th annual event.

November 28 (115)

On this date back in 2002 I ran another Bethesda Turkey Chase.  This was the 20th annual race.  Gobble gobble.

November 27 (114)

Today was the Bethesda Turkey Chase 10K.  I did not do the race this year but volunteered as a course marshall.  This is a shirt from the 16th Annual Turkey Chase (November 22, 1998).  The turkey on this shirt needs some new socks.  Happy Thanksgiving!

November 26 (113)

Here is one of many Thanksgiving Day race shirts.  This one is from a 4-mile 'turkey trot' race in Santa Barbara, CA that we did with Mark and Sherry.

November 25 (112)

Here is another fluid dynamics shirt.  This one is from this year's meeting in San Antonio, TX (not FL).  Two must sees in San Antonio are the river walk (lots of good places to eat) and, of course, the Alamo.

November 24 (111)

Here is a non-running shirt.   This one is from the APS fluid dynamics meeting in Dallas, TX in 2002.

November 23 (110)

Here is another Minnesota Vikings shirt.  This one I got at the Nike factory outlet in Kenosha, WI probably in the early 90s, during the Jerry Burns era.  If you look closely, you'll see that this shirt is actually signed by the coach himself, who I encountered on a flight from Chicago to Minneapolis.  I did my best to honor the coach by not combing my hair; he always appeared on the sidelines with a somewhat disheveled look.  Go Vikings!!

November 22 (109)

This is a shirt from a cross country race that I did with Tom in Dallas, TX on November 23, 2002.  Consistent with a common theme, this race was off road and included a few hay bale obstacles along the way.

November 21 (108)

Here is another Sea Gull Century shirt.  This one is from the 2005 event.  We ended up going out to Ocean City and staying there but it was cold, windy and rainy and I think we might have had colds too so we did not end up doing the ride.  It is a nice shirt, though!

November 20 (107)

Here is a St. Olaf cross country shirt from 1986.    This shirt is from the era in which a large majority of college-associated shirts had the theme 'we do it (fill in the blank)'.  This shirt is no exception; it says '... we do it in Norway valley' on the back.
For the non-Oles out there Norway valley is a wooded section of campus that was also somewhere around the 3-4 mile mark on the 5 mile cross country course.

November 19 (106)

Here is a shirt from the Sea Gull Century bike ride in 2002.  This is a ride on the eastern shore of Maryland that starts and ends in Salisbury, MD.  It is a flat course that has a turn around point (also the stop for a 60 mile version) at the beach.

November 18 (105)

Here is a shirt from the St. Olaf Triathlon in 1988.  I got college PE credit for taking a triathlon class and towards the end of the semester we had a simulated triathlon.  I believe this shirt is actually from another triathlon on campus and I think the cross country team was on the organizing end of the event ... sponsored by Schultzie's bike shop.

November 17 (104)

This is a shirt from a steeplechase race along the lakefront in Chicago.  I did this race at least three times but only have two shirts to show for it.  I don't know if this is from the 1991 race (which would have been on November 17) or from the 1990 race (which would have been on November 11).  Anyway, it was an excellent race where you jump over hay bales and run through water pits.   They even had a version you could do with your dog.

November 16 (103)

On this date in 1997 I ran the 'Old Reliable 10K' in Raleigh, NC.  The race was sponsored by the News & Observer which is why the runners on the shirts are delivering newspapers;  the caption on the shirt says 'we should have been suspicious when the race started at 5:00 AM!'

November 15 (102)

Here is a shirt from the Richmond Marathon that I did on November 13, 1999.  Jodi, Bruce and Kathy were all there to spectate.  One memorable detail of this race was seeing a guy around the 10 mile mark finally realize that some 'friends' of his had loaded up his fanny pack with rocks; as I was passing him he was lightening his load.

November 14 (101)

On this date back in 1992 I did a cross country race at Riis Park, Chicago.   There was some local high school alumni feature to this race but it apparently was also open to anyone else (although I guess I do have a high school diploma ...).

November 13 (100)

Here is a shirt (#100!!) from a race Jodi and I did about a year ago down in Key Biscayne, FL (November 10, 2007).   The race is called the Key Biscayne Lighthouse Run and turns out to be more popular than we thought -- the race was closed when we arrived but one of the volunteers was nice enough to let us in the race.   This turned out to be a problem for a couple of very fast runners at a race in DC this weekend -- they signed up for the race on race day (not officially allowed because money could not be collected on park property or something like that), won the race and then got DQ'ed.

November 12 (99)

Here is a shirt from a 'Brad' race that I did on November 10, 1996.  This was a duathlon (run-bike-run) up at Greenbriar State Park near Hagerstown, MD.  As you can see it is getting close to turkey time for shirt designs.

November 11 (98)

In honor of Veteran's day, here is a shirt from a Veteran's Day race on November 12, 2000.  This was a 10K in West Potomac Park, DC.

November 10 (97)

Here is another race shirt from the OBX half marathon we did yesterday.   It says 'AARRRGGHH' on the back.   The pier is sunny once again but it is actually freezing cold with a strong wind blowing.

November 9 (96)

Today Jodi and I did the OBX Half Marathon: from Nags Head to Manteo.  We had excellent weather and only slight headwinds going up the bridge towards the finish.  The back of this shirt is much better than the front since it's got things like a pirate ship, pirates and treasure maps!

November 8 (95)

Here is a shirt that I got from Jodi on a trip to the Outer Banks, NC.  It is from the fire station in Duck, NC.  We are nearby in Nags Head on the sound side and I'm out on the pier with some kite boarders cruising the breeze and waves in the background.

November 7 (94)

Here is a most excellent UM YA YA shirt that I got from Bruce after his recent visit to St. Olaf.  The best part of this shirt is that if you are not an Ole this probably looks like nonsense; a translation for Michigan fans is that it is the St. Olaf equivalent to 'Go Blue'.

November 6 (93)

Here is a shirt from a race Jodi and I did on November 7, 1998 with some friends of ours in Grapevine, Texas.   Sometime after that I was wearing this shirt on a ferry on the Thames river in London heading towards Greenwich and it turned out that I was sitting next to a guy from Grapevine who was as surprised as I was to see a Grapevine connection so far away!

November 5 (92)

On this date back in 2005 I ran the Cardinal 5K.  This was a race in Kensington, MD to benefit a bird-friendly school.  If you've never seen a cardinal in running shoes, a sweatshirt and headband take a close look at the design.

November 4 (91)

Here is a shirt that I got from mom at Christmas.  It seems like as good a time as any to start thinking about snow!  There were some rumors I heard suggesting that I smile more in these pictures.  So today I put on the biggest smile that I could find -- I think my dentist would approve.

November 3 (90)

On this date back in 1996 I ran the New York City Marathon.  This year's NYC Marathon was yesterday.  This is definitely a classic marathon -- a must see/do event; if you don't run it, go up to spectate.  The race logistics can be tricky (you need to get to the start on Staten Island hours before the race begins) but the course through the five buroughs is worth it.  There is never a dull moment from start to finish.  Jodi pointed out that if you look carefully on this well-worn t-shirt you can see the twin towers; this gives another perspective dating this shirt.

November 2 (89)

Here's another Carolina shirt.  This one is from a campus 5K race back in 1997 or 1998.

November 1 (88)

When in Rome ... Here's a UNC Tar Heel shirt in the spirit of my current locale.   I know this will displease a significant percentage of blog followers (OK, even one blog follower represents a significant portion in this case!) but the bottom line is that I have a bunch of Carolina shirts and this is just the first.
