February 28 (207)

OK, so you do not have a year-long t-shirt supply without having a odd-ball, too-small, home-made one or two.  This is one that I recreated (using a projection system) from a Calvin and Hobbs comic at some point in college.

February 27 (206)

It's Marvin the Martian!  `Where is the kaboom?  There was supposed to be a kaboom.  That makes me very angry, very angry indeed.'  It turns out Marvin has his own Wikipedia page.

February 26 (205)

Here is the first in a series of shirts with cartoon characters on them.  This Daffy Duck shirt I'm pretty sure I got from Kathy.

February 25 (204)

Here is a Virginia 'V' shirt for Jodi today!  When I noticed the ripped sleeve I remembered that one of the last time this shirt was worn was on a recent Thanksgiving Day ... by my DOG ... who did the Bethesda Turkey Chase Race in it.

February 24 (203)

Here is an old shirt (from a school I did not attend) from the mid 80s.  I probably got this on some visit to Concordia in high school.  UM YA YA anyway.

February 23 (202)

Here is another ski/winter sports-related shirt.  This is one from the Lillehammer Olympics in 1994.  This was the first time I got to see Bjorn Daehlie ski in person.  The second time I saw him ski was Saturday at the start of the Birkie.  He led out the elite classic skier wave and ended up second place in a photo finish in Hayward.

February 22 (201)

Here is this year's Birkie shirt!  This was a special year at the Birkie -- the famous Bjorn Daehlie of the 1994 Olympics raced in the classic ski Birkie.  The race was excellent -- several photo finishes in the men's and women's races.  I sprinted past a few skiers from my wave on Main Street (although after a few other skiers got there first ...).

This is last year's Birkie shirt as well as shirt number 200!

February 20 (199)

This is a shirt that I got from Randy.  It is from the City of Lakes Loppet which I have never done.  However, I fully support any cross country ski race!  Watch out for X-C Skiers!!

February 19 (198)

Here is a much nicer shirt.  This is one from the Birkie several years ago.  It is ski season and so I need to get myself in the mood.   Let it snow!

February 18 (197)

Here is another church softball shirt.  No offense to the person who designed this or picked the color scheme but I think this one competes strongly for the ugliest shirt award.  It is safe to say that you will not see me wearing this shirt again.  It is destined for chain cleaning and lawn mower dipstick wiping.

February 17 (196)

Here is a shirt from a church softball team I played on in Chicago.   If the printing looks like its on an angle, it is.

February 16 (195)

Here is a shirt I got at Northwestern in early 90s.  It's an intramural champion shirt we got after winning the university ultimate frisbee league.

February 15 (194)

Here is a Birkie t-shirt.    It shows the course map on the front and has the elevation chart on the back.

February 14 (193)

Here is a shirt I picked up in May 1989 clarifying in no uncertain terms my graduation status.

February 13 (192)

This is the official St. Olaf class of 1989 shirt.  The design is by a student who did the weekly cartoon in the St. Olaf newspaper ... the Manitou Messenger.  If you look very closely you'll see a fram fram as well as an um ya ya.

February 12 (191)

This is the official dorm shirt from the 88/89 school year at St. Olaf when I lived in Rand Hall.  I'm not sure exactly what reference the 'surf . sun . sand . studies' had in mind.  My guess is that whoever designed the shirt also had some spring break plans down at Padre Island or in Fort Lauderdale.  You could probably find some sun, sand and definitely studying in Northfield but surf would be notably absent.

February 11 (190)

This is a shirt from a Special Olympics Event in Northfield, MN that a bunch of guys from the cross country/track team helped organize and coach.  We spent a year helping coach the special olympics athletes as part of an honor house project.  It was lots of fun.

February 10 (189)

After a brief interruption from a passing comet, we are back to the St. Olaf theme.  This is a shirt that I got from doing a St. Olaf Dance-A-Thon which basically was an excuse to hang out all night in the gym and listen to music.  I remember seeing Ipso Facto several times at St. Olaf but do not know if they were on the schedule for this particular event.

February 9 (188)

On this date back in 1986 Halley's Comet made an appearance. The comet comes around about once every 75 years.  The next scheduled appearance is July 28, 2061.  This shirt was a gift from a physics professor friend of mine.

February 8 (187)

Here is another UM-YA-YA shirt from St. Olaf (see also November 7).  I don't remember exactly when I got this or if it was a gift (potentially from K & B) but it definitely dates from around the mid 80s.  Unlike some of my other shirts from that era this one is still basically intact.  St. Olaf and t-shirts brings to mind a t-shirt counting competition I once had with a guy in our dorm (yes, this is not necessarily a new thing for me).  The only catch of the competition was that the count was based on how many t-shirts you could be wearing at the same time -- I think we maxxed out between 20 and 30 shirts after we got too big.

February 7 (186)

This is the official shirt of the 1989 St. Olaf Track and Field team.  It is an appropriate shirt for the day since today the US National Cross Country Championships were held in MD.  Jodi and I went out to watch -- Jodi volunteered at the packet pickup and I spectated and did a little course maintenance.  There were some great races and the last, mens open race came down to a sprint finish with Meb K. taking the title by a stride.

February 6 (185)

Here is a shirt designed by my college roommate for the St. Olaf Physics majors our senior year.  You'll note that the design features a pocket, a pocket protector, an HP calculator, a ruler, a mechanical pencil, a Sharpie as well as some multi-color pens.  The best part is on the back with a 'Physics Comp. Exam' where you must match the equation with the correct class (e.g. which equation goes with Quantum Mechanics or where did we learn F=MA, etc.).

February 5 (184)

Here is a shirt that Jodi made about ten years ago.  She has one that matches.   Can you guess the vegetable in the design?  Hint: they are green, round and come in pods.

February 4 (183)

I got this shirt on July 4th this past summer in Altoona, PA where Jodi and I watched their minor league baseball team -- The Altoona Curve -- play a game.  There were excellent fireworks after the game that we could see in all different directions including the ones shot off from just outside the outfield wall.  Note that it is the Altoona Curve (singular) since the name came from a particular curve in the railroad track as it passed through Altoona.   This team apparently joins other 'singular' teams such as the Stanford Cardinal, the Colorado Avalanche, the Miami Heat, etc.

February 3 (182)

This shirt is from Woods Hole, MA.   Jodi  has a similar shirt in a different color.  Apparently there is some story about there being lots of black Labrador Retrievers in the town (which I
think is/was true) and somehow a moose wandered onto the scene (or else a dog that looked like a moose, or was named Moose) and ended up on this shirt.  Can you pick the moose out of the lineup?

February 2 (181)

Here is another Giants Ridge t-shirt from the mid to late 80s.  It is in a little better shape than yesterday's shirt but not by much!

February 1 (180)

Here is a shirt from the first Giants Ridge Pepsi Challenge Cup Race in Biwabik, MN in late January/early February 1985.    This was a 25K or 50K cross country ski race (I did the 25K).  This was probably one of my first ever race t-shirts.  This shirt has seen a lot of wear and tear; the sleeves are hanging on by threads and there is a hole in the back of the shirt that is bigger than the neck.
