December 31 (148)

Here is a shirt from one of my favorite breakfast places: Elmo's Diner in Carborro, NC (also in Durham, NC).  Excellent pancakes!

December 30 (147)

Here is a shirt from the Dogfish Head Alehouse.  They helped sponsor Jodi's 3 Day walk at least a couple times and so I picked up this shirt so that a percentage of the proceeds went to breast cancer research!

December 29 (146)

Here is a GMU shirt.  It says 1957 on it but it is really only a week or so old.  Please note the (NFC North) Vikings cap.  Go Vikings!

December 28 (145)

Here is a shirt from a race a few years ago in Edina, MN on the 29th of December.   It was an evening 5K (running) race even though I'd much prefer to be doing a 5K ski instead.

December 27 (144)

Here is another good ski shirt.  This one I got from Bruce and Kathy for Christmas a couple years ago.  Life is good when you are skiing and it is snowing!

December 26 (143)

Here is a shirt that I got from the Jule Nisse.  Three Rivers is a series of parks where one can partake in some excellent snow/ski-related actvities.

December 25 (142)

Merry Christmas!  Here is a shirt that I picked up at Snowbird.  It's a Kuhl shirt which translates to 'cool' apparently.   It is a good ski-related shirt -- Jodi and I will hit the trails later this afternoon.

December 24 (141)

Here is a shirt that I got from Mom and Dad several years ago for Christmas.  This shirt has some typical St. Olaf Christmas scenes on it such as lutefisk and truckloads of melted butter.  I prefer lefse.

December 23 (140)

Here is my one other Hard Rock Cafe shirt.  This is also an early 90s vintage shirt that I got from Elyn from Rhodes.

Monday, December 22, 2008

December 22 (139)

It seems like no year-long supply of t-shirts would be complete without the ubiquitous Hard Rock Cafe shirt.  This is one I got in London in 1993/1994.

December 21 (138)

Here is another shirt following the OBX theme.  This is a homemade shirt made in 2004 during a t-shirt making activity with all of our nieces and nephews at the time.

Saturday, December 20, 2008

December 20 (137)

Here is another shirt along the OBX theme.  This one is from a BBQ place in Avon, NC called Bubba's: Keeper of the Pit.  This is excellent North Carolina barbeque with tasty sides especially sitting outside with ocean sounds and the smell of BBQ and salt air.   Jodi is wearing her Bubba's shirt today also!

December 19 (136)

Here is another shirt from the OBX.  In fact, this one is also from Duck, NC.  I particularly like the shark - there is an even bigger shark on the back of the shirt!

Thursday, December 18, 2008

December 18 (135)

Here is another OBX shirt.  This one has the duck from Duck, NC.  Quack quack.

December 17 (134)

Here is an Outer Banks shirt.  This particular one I got earlier this fall when we were down there for a race.  Some local friends of ours took us to an excellent place called 'Food Dudes Kitchen' in Kill Devil Hills.  It looks like it could be just a hole in the wall place but it turns out that it has really great food -- and big portions.

December 16 (133)

Here is a shirt from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum that I got from some friends for whom I was dog-sitting.  Their dog had recently had puppies and so it was a challenge keeping track of all the pups.

December 15 (132)

On this date last year Jodi and I did the Rudolph's Red Nose 10K Run in Fairfax, VA.  The run helped support the New School of Northern Virginia.  They handed out red Rudolph noses at the finish line.

December 14 (131)

Here is a shirt that I got from Kathy.  It is from an art museum in Zurich and shows a cool sculpture by Alberto Giacometti.

December 13 (130)

Here is a shirt I got last night at Jammin Java;  Jodi and I went there to see Robbie Shaefer perform.  It is an excellent venue to watch and listen to musicians AND they have excellent food - I'd recommend the chicken and black bean chili.

December 12 (129)

On this date back in 1999 I did the Columbia Duathlon.  This was just a relatively standard duathlon (run 2 miles, bike 12 miles and run 2 more miles).  This was another 'Brad' race.

Thursday, December 11, 2008

December 11 (128)

Here is a shirt with some frogs on it.  This is a shirt that I got from Marc, Amy and family but I cannot remember the exact context of the shirt other than it says 'friends in high places'.   Anyway, it is a cool shirt and I like the frogs.

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

December 10 (127)

On this date back in 2000 I did another 'Brad' race in Seneca Creek Park.  This was also a duathlon of sorts but the event consisted of a 2 mile run, followed by a 10 mile bike, followed by a 1 mile run, followed by a 5 mile bike followed by a 1 mile run -- a run-bike-run-bike-run race.  Awesome!   I like the shirt too.

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

December 9 (126)

Here is a relatively rare December race shirt.  This one is from a 'Brad' race on this date but I'm not sure what year.  It was a duathlon (run-bike-run) held in Seneca Creek Park.  The shirts from these races always had some kind of quirky design -- this one being no exception.

December 8 (125)

Here is another shirt that I got from Kathy.  It is from the San Diego Zoo.    This shirt is cool because there is an animal pattern printed on the whole shirt - front, back and sleeves.

December 7 (124)

Here is a shirt that I got from a race Jodi and I did this morning in Reston, VA.  It was a 10K called the Fall Into Winter 10K.  It was cold and windy but definitely a fun race!

December 6 (123)

Here is a shirt that I got from Kathy.  I'm not sure where or when she got it but I like the suggestion of  exploring the great outdoors and protect and preserve.

Friday, December 5, 2008

December 5 (122)

Here is a shirt from Cape Cod that I got from Phil.    I had not been to Cape Cod until after I had this shirt.  I did not see the Cranberry Company when I was there but we did see Martha's Vineyard, Woods Hole and took a whale-watching cruise out of Provincetown.

December 4 (121)

Here is a Life is Good shirt that I got on our trip to the Outer
Banks, NC in October.  Since today is the last day of classes for the semester it seemed like an appropriate shirt.

Wednesday, December 3, 2008

December 3 (120)

Here is a shirt from Newport, RI.  Jodi and I drove up to Rhode Island and Cape Cod one summer a few years ago.  While in Newport we took a evening cruise on the Madeleine in Narragansett Bay.  We had a good stiff breeze and the sailing was fun (at least for me).

December 2 (119)

Here is a shirt I got in Cambridge, England probably in 1993 or 1994.  Rowing is the big thing there on the twisty Cam river.  Twice a year they hold an event called 'the bumps' where each team basically tries to catch up to the boat in front before getting 'bumped' by the boat coming up behind.  I rowed for the Darwin College boat.

December 1 (118)

Here is a shirt from the Northern Central Trail Marathon from 2003 (November 29).   This year's race was also this past weekend.  The course for this is out and back on a mostly wooded hard packed trail.  There is a downhill first mile and an uphill last mile and a half.  I've had my three fastest marathons on this course.  Jodi and Uncle Stevie did the marathon relay (1/2 marathon each).

November 30 (117)

Here is the last Bethesda Turkey Chase 10K race shirt.  This is one from November 23, 2006 Thanksgiving Day.  Some might say that they are thankful I do not have any more Bethesda Turkey Chase shirts.  If so, you should also be thankful that several other Turkey Chase shirts I once had have been abandoned at race starts of various other races.

November 29 (116)

Here is the third in an installment of four Bethesda Turkey Chase race shirts.   This one is from Thanksgiving Day: November 22, 2007.  This was the 25th annual event.

Friday, November 28, 2008

November 28 (115)

On this date back in 2002 I ran another Bethesda Turkey Chase.  This was the 20th annual race.  Gobble gobble.

Thursday, November 27, 2008

November 27 (114)

Today was the Bethesda Turkey Chase 10K.  I did not do the race this year but volunteered as a course marshall.  This is a shirt from the 16th Annual Turkey Chase (November 22, 1998).  The turkey on this shirt needs some new socks.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

November 26 (113)

Here is one of many Thanksgiving Day race shirts.  This one is from a 4-mile 'turkey trot' race in Santa Barbara, CA that we did with Mark and Sherry.

November 25 (112)

Here is another fluid dynamics shirt.  This one is from this year's meeting in San Antonio, TX (not FL).  Two must sees in San Antonio are the river walk (lots of good places to eat) and, of course, the Alamo.

Monday, November 24, 2008

November 24 (111)

Here is a non-running shirt.   This one is from the APS fluid dynamics meeting in Dallas, TX in 2002.

Sunday, November 23, 2008

November 23 (110)

Here is another Minnesota Vikings shirt.  This one I got at the Nike factory outlet in Kenosha, WI probably in the early 90s, during the Jerry Burns era.  If you look closely, you'll see that this shirt is actually signed by the coach himself, who I encountered on a flight from Chicago to Minneapolis.  I did my best to honor the coach by not combing my hair; he always appeared on the sidelines with a somewhat disheveled look.  Go Vikings!!

November 22 (109)

This is a shirt from a cross country race that I did with Tom in Dallas, TX on November 23, 2002.  Consistent with a common theme, this race was off road and included a few hay bale obstacles along the way.

Friday, November 21, 2008

November 21 (108)

Here is another Sea Gull Century shirt.  This one is from the 2005 event.  We ended up going out to Ocean City and staying there but it was cold, windy and rainy and I think we might have had colds too so we did not end up doing the ride.  It is a nice shirt, though!

Thursday, November 20, 2008

November 20 (107)

Here is a St. Olaf cross country shirt from 1986.    This shirt is from the era in which a large majority of college-associated shirts had the theme 'we do it (fill in the blank)'.  This shirt is no exception; it says '... we do it in Norway valley' on the back.
For the non-Oles out there Norway valley is a wooded section of campus that was also somewhere around the 3-4 mile mark on the 5 mile cross country course.

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

November 19 (106)

Here is a shirt from the Sea Gull Century bike ride in 2002.  This is a ride on the eastern shore of Maryland that starts and ends in Salisbury, MD.  It is a flat course that has a turn around point (also the stop for a 60 mile version) at the beach.

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

November 18 (105)

Here is a shirt from the St. Olaf Triathlon in 1988.  I got college PE credit for taking a triathlon class and towards the end of the semester we had a simulated triathlon.  I believe this shirt is actually from another triathlon on campus and I think the cross country team was on the organizing end of the event ... sponsored by Schultzie's bike shop.

Monday, November 17, 2008

November 17 (104)

This is a shirt from a steeplechase race along the lakefront in Chicago.  I did this race at least three times but only have two shirts to show for it.  I don't know if this is from the 1991 race (which would have been on November 17) or from the 1990 race (which would have been on November 11).  Anyway, it was an excellent race where you jump over hay bales and run through water pits.   They even had a version you could do with your dog.

Sunday, November 16, 2008

November 16 (103)

On this date in 1997 I ran the 'Old Reliable 10K' in Raleigh, NC.  The race was sponsored by the News & Observer which is why the runners on the shirts are delivering newspapers;  the caption on the shirt says 'we should have been suspicious when the race started at 5:00 AM!'

Saturday, November 15, 2008

November 15 (102)

Here is a shirt from the Richmond Marathon that I did on November 13, 1999.  Jodi, Bruce and Kathy were all there to spectate.  One memorable detail of this race was seeing a guy around the 10 mile mark finally realize that some 'friends' of his had loaded up his fanny pack with rocks; as I was passing him he was lightening his load.

Friday, November 14, 2008

November 14 (101)

On this date back in 1992 I did a cross country race at Riis Park, Chicago.   There was some local high school alumni feature to this race but it apparently was also open to anyone else (although I guess I do have a high school diploma ...).

Thursday, November 13, 2008

November 13 (100)

Here is a shirt (#100!!) from a race Jodi and I did about a year ago down in Key Biscayne, FL (November 10, 2007).   The race is called the Key Biscayne Lighthouse Run and turns out to be more popular than we thought -- the race was closed when we arrived but one of the volunteers was nice enough to let us in the race.   This turned out to be a problem for a couple of very fast runners at a race in DC this weekend -- they signed up for the race on race day (not officially allowed because money could not be collected on park property or something like that), won the race and then got DQ'ed.

November 12 (99)

Here is a shirt from a 'Brad' race that I did on November 10, 1996.  This was a duathlon (run-bike-run) up at Greenbriar State Park near Hagerstown, MD.  As you can see it is getting close to turkey time for shirt designs.
